The Saturday Warriors

When I started signing up for triathlons in 2012, I made a personal decision to not train or race on Sunday. It was a decision driven by religious belief/conviction and it was consistent with choices I had made as a kid playing sports. What I quickly realized was that I wasn't alone. Many of my friends in my local congregation were also athletes who took Sunday's off from training and racing. The difficulty with this commitment is obviously two-fold: One, most races are scheduled for Sunday (about 75% of half and full distance Ironman sponsored races are Sunday) and two, Sunday is a critical part of most "weekend warrior" training programs. While it has been difficult at times to stick to this commitment, it hasn't been impossible and in fact it's been very rewarding. This blog is not to convince you or anybody else that you should take Sunday's off, rather it is intended for people who have already made the commitment and are looking for a resource and maybe even some motivation. I do expect this to be a God-fearing religious audience but I also hope that it attracts others as well. The blog won't just be about making the most of the other 6 days; I plan on discussing health and nutrition, training and racing on a budget, and how to include family members in the process. The title of the blog comes partly from the phrase 'weekend warrior' but is also tongue in cheek with the classic Mormon film, Saturday's Warrior.
I'll consider the site a success if it meets the following goals by August 4, 2016:
1) 200 articles
2) 10 different guest articles, including Jocelyn Gardner McCauley
3) A new design/template
In addition, I hope to achieve the following personal goals:
1) Qualify for Kona
2) Finish an Ironman under 9 hours
3) Keep my family and friends close
Thanks for joining me on the journey. 199 articles to go!
